Parliament, Wednesday, 29 July 2026 – The Impeachment Committee for the Section 89 Enquiry today resolved to appeal the ruling of the Western Cape High Court on President Cyril Ramaphosa’s urgent application.

The judgment, delivered last week, interdicted the committee from proceeding with public impeachment hearings, pending the determination of the president’s review application.

On Wednesday, the committee received a briefing from Parliament’s Legal Services Division on the judgment and considered its implications for the committee’s work. The Division also provided a legal opinion on whether the authors of the Independent Panel Report should be called to present their findings.

Following the resolution on the appeal, the Chairperson, Mr Makashule Gana, said the committee will work with its legal team to prepare and file the necessary papers.

The committee further resolved that the members of the Independent Panel who authored the report will not be required to appear before it, as the panel’s mandate concluded with the submission of its report. Once appointed, the evidence leaders will guide the committee through the report and its evidence.

Also on the agenda for today’s meeting were deliberations on the nominated names for appointment as evidence leader and the draft terms of reference that will guide the enquiry. However, the committee could not conclude all agenda items due to the length of the deliberations and members’ contributions.

The Chairperson said that the committee will reconvene next week to continue deliberations over two days – Wednesday, 5 August and Friday, 7 August 2026. “The committee will continue its work towards finalising the appointment of the evidence leaders and the terms of reference,” the Chairperson said.
