Parliament, Tuesday, 20 August 2024 – The Chairperson of the Portfolio Committee on Higher Education and Training, Mr Tebogo Letsie, has expressed his profound sadness at the news that six students from the North West University’s (NWU) Vanderbijl campus lost their lives in a car crash.

According to reports, the NWU students were involved in a devastating car crash in the early hours of Sunday, 18 August just eight kilometres from their residences in Vanderbijlpark. Of the eight students in the vehicle, six tragically lost their lives, while two others remain in a stable condition in hospital.

Mr Letsie said, “The untimely death of these young, promising students is both heartbreaking and senseless. Their futures were full of potential and now they have been cut short in a cruel manner.”

On behalf of the committee, Mr Letsie conveys deep condolences to the family and friends of the deceased students and the entire university community. He also wishes the two hospitalised students a speedy recovery. It is crucial that those responsible for this heinous act be held accountable and swiftly brought to justice, he added.
