Parliament, Monday, 14 September 2026 – The Chairperson of the Portfolio Committee on Transport, Mr Donald Selamolela, has called on entities in the transport portfolio to seek to replicate the achievements by Transnet and the Airports Company of South Africa (ACSA) in the coming financial year.
He said: “We have a standard to measure our performance as the sector and we sincerely hope Transnet and ACSA do not regress. Good governance and good performance coupled with efficient financial management yields positive results. We congratulate the two entities for recording profit at a time when big businesses are finding it difficult to operate and generate income.”
“Surely it is no exaggeration to expect and demand same level of performance from across the sector. This is the kind of results that benefit not only state-owned entities employees but the poorest of the poor,” emphasised Mr Selamolela.
On Friday, Transnet announced it has recorded income of about R4 billion for the first time in years. The entity had been returned to the Portfolio Committee on Transport for oversight when the department of public enterprises ceased to exist.
Mr Selamolela said Transnet needed to work hard and show that the achievement was neither by accident nor coincidence and that the committee will do all it could in its oversight role to support the entity.
“The country must be proud given where Transnet had been. This is an entity that had been infiltrated and targeted by syndicates and massive corruption. All entities must stay clear of these challenges and ensure that they continue to contribute towards the developmental goals they were founded on, as well as economic growth and improved job creation targets.”
Mr Selamolela said it was a master stroke for the President and the ANC to strategically move Transnet to the Transport Sector where it belonged.
“The committee is looking forward to getting a proper briefing on these results. We do not want regression; Transnet must build on these exploits and strengthen the aspect of strategy that worked as to yield these results for the financial year,” concluded Mr Selamolela.
