Parliament, Thursday, 18 December 2025 - The Portfolio Committee on Sport, Arts and Culture has noted with profound sadness the passing of Lusanda Dumke, an ex-Springbok Women Captain.

The committee sends its heartfelt condolences to the family, friends and the entire rugby community.

The Chairperson of the committee, Mr Joe McGluwa, said Dumke departed at such a young age and a lot more was expected from her.

“She embodied elite women athletes playing rugby. She was all an athlete should represent, a leader, abrasive player, presence, and agility of mind. Lusanda was just an intelligent rugby player whose intellect was complimented by aggressiveness and professionalism,” said Mr McGluwa.

“This is a loss for women sports and not just rugby. The had still expected a lot more from her,” Mr McGluwa added.

Dumke passed on this week only aged 28. She was contracted to the Blue Bulls Daisies at the time of passing and represented South Africa 36 times.

Mr McGluwa said Dumke was a champion who also captained the Blue Bulls to two championship titles. “Lusanda was a true champion who made women rugby such a joy to watch. A true champion from the Border region and an athlete of international calibre.”

“The committee wishes to say go well champ, you have lived a fulfilled life for your age.”
