Parliament, Wednesday, 6 October 2021 – The Chairperson of the Portfolio Committee on Communications, Mr Boyce Maneli, has welcomed a renewed undertaking by Minister Khumbudzo Ntshavheni to meet the switch-off deadline to migrate from analogue to digital television in South Africa.

The initial switch-off deadline was June 2015, as agreed to by the International Telecommunication Union in Geneva in 2006. South Africa missed the deadline.

The committee has since prioritised the digital migration programme in its agenda.

During his State of the Nation Address in February this year, President Cyril Ramaphosa directed the Department of Communications and Digital Technologies to complete the programme by 31 March 2022.

Mr Maneli said that the approval of the Digital Migration Plan by Cabinet and subsequent undertaking by Minister Ntshavheni are not only reassuring, but they are also providing the committee with the renewed impetus to exercise oversight on the programme.
