Parliament, Wednesday, 22 April 2026 – The Portfolio Committee on Trade, Industry and Competition welcomes the National Assembly’s adoption of its report recommending three names to the Minister of Trade, Industry and Competition, to fill the vacancy of the Chairperson of the Board of the National Lotteries Commission (NLC).
The names of the candidates, which are Mr Tembinkosi Bonakele, Ms Mpho Mosing and Adv Lufuno Nevondwe, will now be submitted to the Minister for consideration.
The candidates respectively had the top three highest scores in the interview, met all legislative requirements and had undergone security vetting by the State Security Agency. The committee, however, recommended that the Minister should consider conducting a probity test of the recommended candidates as envisaged in Section 3A(2) of the Lotteries Act, prior to finalising his decision.
Yesterday the National Assembly adopted the committee’s report with an overwhelming number of 218 members voting in favour of the report and 59 members voting against the report. The position of Chairperson of the NLC Board is critical to ensure stability and public trust in the NLC, which has faced scrutiny in recent years over governance and the allocation of funds.
The committee remains confident that the process followed was thorough and transparent, and that the shortlisted candidates are capable of steering the NLC forward.
