Parliament, Tuesday, 30 September 2025 – The Portfolio Committee on Transport has sent heartfelt condolences to the bereaved families of the 12 people who reportedly died in an accident which occurred on Sunday in Limpopo’s Capricorn District.
The Chairperson of the committee, Mr Donald Selamolela, said the accident was terrible and very unfortunate when the country is about to observe the Transport Month, and soon be heading to the Summer Festival.
It is reported that the victims of the accident are congregants who were returning from a church service. “We extend our condolences to the relatives, fellow congregants, and friends. This is the kind of accident we do not want to see occur on our roads. People were returning from church and surely an accident was the last thing on their minds,” said Mr Selamolela.
“We are concerned about how this accident occurred and it seems drivers are just refusing from taking responsibility when they are on the roads. That is unfortunate, because 90% of the working population is on the roads, and we owe it to them to ensure safe and quality driving, and responsible driver behavior. It does not seem that this was the case in this instance,” he added.
Mr Selamolela said heightened visibility of law enforcements ought to be coupled with compulsory stops and checks. “The law enforcements must have courage to stop and search people. We need to double our effort and ensure drivers take ultimate responsibility whenever they are on the roads.”
The details of the accident are still subject to investigations, and Mr Selamolela said it would be preferable if the Road Traffic Management Corporation could move with speed and ascertain what happened.
“What the investigation finds should influence the strategies that will be put in place as we are headed for the festive season.” The committee also notes and appreciates the punctuality with which the Limpopo Provincial Government got involved and offered assistance to the affected families.
