Parliament, Saturday, 31 October 2026 – The Chairperson of the Portfolio Committee on Transport, Mr Donald Selamolela has called on the national bodies in the taxi industry to speedily intervene on the outbreak of taxi violence in the Western Cape.

The committee condemns the violence and mourns those that have paid the ultimate price. “On behalf of the Portfolio Committee on Transport we send our deepest condolences to the families of those who have lost their lives and wish speedy recovery on all the affected.”

“This is a sad development in our country. It is happening at the point when government is doing all it can to maximise support and investment on the public transport space. The last thing we need is this bout of sporadic shootings that seem to be indiscriminate,” Mr Selamolela said.

“We condemn the criminality and violence that accompanies this outbreak and we call on law enforcement to ensure and maintain visibility until calm has been restored. The country is busy preparing for local elections and there should be nothing that threatens that expression of the people’s wishes next week.”

Fierce violence broke out on Thursday morning in Cape Town and a number of taxi operators and drivers have reportedly been killed.

Mr Selamolela said the shooting at the Delft taxi rank should never have happened. “People licensed to use and carry firearms should never be allowed to just draw firearms in front of people and start shooting randomly. A number of lives were endangered for things which they know nothing about.”

“We call on all operators to focus on their business. They must all desist from acts that will compromise the industry that has seen so many lives improved. In some communities they are the only mode of affordable transport. Our attention should be focused on making the industry affordable, safe and reliable, and importantly complimentary to other forms of transport and the economy,” concluded Mr Selamolela.
