Parliament, Wednesday, 16 October 2024 – The Chairperson of the Portfolio Committee on Sports, Arts and Culture, Mr Joe McGluwa, has noted with pride the splendid performance of the Proteas Women at the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup.
Mr McGluwa said the question of women sports was each day given justification for similar treatment by both associations, media, broadcasters, marketers, and South Africa’s umbrella body for sports, South African Sports Confederation and Olympic Committee (SASCOC).
The committee wishes South Africa well against Australia in their first semi final on Thursday, Dubai, UAE. He said: “These distinguished performances by Proteas Women are noticeable and we all ought to be proud. When we hosted the T20 World Women Cricket World Cup we played Australia (our semi finals opponent in 2024).”
Mr McGluwa said the treatment is no longer in question, the issue was what must give before women are made, rightly so, full professional status in traditional male sports like rugby, cricket and football.
Cricket is one of the top five most watched sport in South Africa. For this reason as the chairperson of the committee I have attended a very informative Indaba of cricket South Africa earlier this year on their role and plans to transform not only cricket as a whole but to address the inequalities amongst women in sport.
“We also call upon the Eminent Persons Group whose mandate is to provide regular status reports on transformation in sport to do what is best for this country that is to monitor and elevate the implementation of the transformation charter and score card in sport organizations and Schools
“We’ve had the Springbok Women giving very good account of themselves in the recently concluded WXV2 nations tournament (Cape Town), that featured Australia, Spain, Japan, Italy and ourselves. Banyana Banyana are African Champions and it can be done in cricket as well,” emphasised Mr McGluwa. The committee wishes Protea women all of the best on Thursday.
