Parliament, Thursday, 16 April 2026 – The Chairperson of the Portfolio Committee on Sport, Arts and Culture, Mr Joe McGluwa, has extended heartfelt best wishes to South Africa’s relay team as it departs for Gaborone, Botswana, to participate in the World Athletics Relays, hosted for the first time on African soil.
Mr McGluwa emphasised that the team carries the responsibility of representing the Republic with pride and excellence, reflecting the recent global survey that ranked South Africa fourth among the most athletically talented countries worldwide and the leading nation in Africa.
Mr McGluwa said: “We want to wish our athletes well and trust they will represent the Republic with honour. They must give a very good account of themselves and of our country.”
Mr McGluwa also highlighted the resilience and winning spirit of South Africans, affirming that the team embodies the slogan “Hulle weet nie wat ons weet nie,” which in English means they don’t know what we know – a true testament to the nation’s strength and determination.
The committee also extends its appreciation and support to Athletics South Africa and the South African Sports Confederation and Olympic Committee for their continued commitment to nurturing talent and ensuring that the South African athletes shine on the global stage.
