Parliament, Thursday, 15 May 2025 – The Chairperson of the Portfolio Committee on Sport, Arts and Culture, Mr Joe McGluwa has learnt with shock the passing of ex-Springbok player, Cornal Hendricks.
Mr McGluwa said it was sad to lose a celebrated star whose stardom may not have entirely been fulfilled. “We are saddened by this loss. Many in the rugby circles got to know the ability and the talent Cornal possessed, that saw him climb the professional rugby ladder and achieving the ultimate prize of representing his country. We will forever be proud of this boy from Paarl,” said Mr McGluwa.
Cornal reportedly passed last night aged 37. He was with the Blue Bulls at the time of his passing. Mr McGluwa said there can never be a story of resilience as demonstrated by Cornal whose early rugby career was challenged by health related issues which he overcame to become what he became. “Cornal went on to represent many top teams at professional level. Go well Champ, yours was a story of disadvantage, yet you overcame all and became the best.”
The committee sends it deepest and heartfelt condolences to the family of Cornal and the broader rugby community. “May his soul rest in eternal peace.”
