Parliament, Tuesday, 28 April 2026 – The Chairperson of the Portfolio Committee on Sport, Arts and Culture Mr Joe McGluwa has congratulated the South Africa’s Women Cricket team (Proteas Women) for comprehensively beating India in a T20 Series.
Mr McGluwa said there could not have been a better way to celebrate the Freedom Day celebrations in South Africa. “This is a clear indication that South Africa has achieved her freedom, and through women sport and progress we need to identify where sport opportunities could be further enhanced. This is reassurance that while we excel in the men’s area, our women too are not far behind.”
The Proteas Women clinched the series with India by beating India 4–1 in the five‑match T20I series. The final game was played on Monday, Freedom Day, in Benoni, and South Africa won by 23 runs. Captain Laura Wolvaardt starred with the bat, amassing 92 runs not out, and thereby sealing a dominant home performance ahead of the upcoming ICC Women’s T20 World Cup in June.
Mr McGluwa wished the girls well during the world cup and said their endeavours needed to motivate a young girl child who still does not believe she is free, and that through sports they can live the best of their lives. “Freedom Day is a reminder of the sacrifices that gave us the chance to live, play, compete, and mingle together and dream for a free and better South Africa where women excel.”
