Parliament, Tuesday, 16 December 2025 – As South Africans mark Reconciliation Day, the Portfolio Committee on Sport, Arts and Culture calls on all communities to reaffirm their commitment to unity, dignity and shared nationhood.
Reconciliation is not a symbolic gesture observed once a year; it is a continuous effort to strengthen social cohesion, address persistent inequalities, and promote transparency in all spheres of society.
Through sport, arts and culture, we have witnessed the power of South Africans to bridge divides, celebrate diversity, and build spaces where every voice is valued and heard.
These traits remain among the most powerful instruments for healing and social cohesion — qualities for which South Africans are recognised across the world.
This day reminds us that our differences are not a threat to our democracy, but a source of strength when embraced with respect and openness.
The committee urges all South Africans to reflect on our shared history, confront and rectify the inequalities that persist, and work together to build a more inclusive and vibrant future. Reconciliation can only grow when we choose empathy, and we must not allow anyone to divide us, especially given the painful past we have overcome.
The committee remains committed to supporting programmes and institutions that advance social cohesion, protect our cultural heritage, and promote opportunities for all
