Parliament, Thursday, 14 May 2026 – The Chairperson of the Portfolio Committee on Social Development, Ms Bridget Masango, has noted the announcement by President Cyril Ramaphosa regarding the dismissal of the Minister of Social Development, Ms Sisisi Tolashe, from office.
The committee has further noted the appointment of Ms Sindisiwe Chikunga as Acting Minister of Social Development pending the appointment of a permanent Minister in due course.
It is concerning that this is occurring at a time when the department is experiencing leadership instability, with the Director-General position currently filled in an acting capacity and most senior management positions also occupied on an acting basis.
The committee hopes that the important services provided through the Department of Social Development, South African Social Security Agency and the National Development Agency will continue to reach the people who depend on them every day, effectively and without disruption.
The committee believes that leadership in government carries a responsibility to protect public trust, uphold accountability and ensure that institutions remain focused on the people they serve. It is important to remember that while the department is facing a leadership change, millions of South Africans still expect effective service delivery. The work of government must therefore continue with stability, urgency and care.
The committee will engage the department and the acting minister as soon as possible to ensure continuity in the delivery of services and stability within the sector during this transition period.
