Parliament, Thursday, 5 September 2024 – The Portfolio Committee on Public Service and Administration welcomed the presentation on the Public Service Commission (PSC) Bill which it received from the Public Service Commission yesterday. The Bill seeks, among others, to repeal the Public Service Commission Act of 1997.
The committee will strive to strengthen the Public Service Commission to enable it to operate as an independent and impartial constitutional body with its own secretariat. Strengthening the powers of the PSC is in line with the objectives of the National Development Plan Vision 2030. Furthermore, extending the PSC’s mandate to municipalities and public entities would play a pertinent role in overseeing the appointments based on the meritocratic system in all three spheres of government.
Restoring and protecting the independence of the PSC means the Commission will further oversee the implementation of the Framework Towards Professionalisation of the Public Sector, conduct lifestyle audits and assist with anti-corruption measures.
The Chairperson of the committee, Mr Jan de Villers, has committed to fast-tracking the finalisation of the Public Service Commission Bill in the next quarter (October -December 2024).
