Parliament, Tuesday, 4 November 2025 – The Select Committee on Petitions and Executive Undertakings has decided to invite the business rescue practitioners of South African Express Airways to appear before it. This follows a petition submitted to the National Council of Provinces (NCOP), asking for its intervention in matters relating to the airline’s liquidation.
The committee today met with the petitioner, Mr Hlumani Khasibe, who said he represents more than 600 former SA Express employees. Mr Khasibe is seeking the NCOP’s assistance in addressing what he called the impact of government’s failure to challenge the airline’s liquidation, which left hundreds of workers without any financial support. He argued to the committee that this failure has caused serious injustices that must be corrected.
The committee expressed concern about the plight of the former employees, noting that many have not received any payments due to them from the liquidation process. Members also raised concern that even after the matter was reported to the Human Rights Commission, no progress was made.
Committee Chairperson Mr Ofentse Mokae welcomed the committee’s unanimous decision to call all relevant stakeholders to appear before the committee together with the Department of Transport. “We are pleased that the committee has agreed that the business rescue practitioners and other stakeholders must come before us and account,” he said.
