Parliament, Sunday, 1 November 2026 – The Portfolio Committee on Forestry, Fisheries and Environment today expressed their profound sadness at the passing of renowned environmental justice activist Dr Desmond D'Sa.

Dr D'Sa, founder of the South Durban Community Environmental Alliance (SDCEA), was a fearless champion of community rights, environmental protection and social justice. He dedicated his life to advocating for vulnerable communities, particularly those affected by pollution, environmental degradation and the unequal burden of industrial development. Through decades of activism, he gave a voice to communities that were often overlooked. Dr D’Sa played a pivotal role in advancing environmental justice in South Africa and beyond.

His unwavering commitment to safeguarding the environment and protecting the health and well-being of communities earned him national and international recognition. He will be remembered for his courage, determination and steadfast belief that all people have the right to live in a safe and healthy environment.

South Africa has lost a tireless advocate who consistently held institutions accountable and challenged society to place people and the environment at the centre of development. His legacy will continue to inspire future generations of environmental activists, community leaders and citizens committed to building a more just and sustainable world.

The committee extends its deepest condolences to his family, friends, colleagues, fellow activists and the many communities whose lives were impacted by his work. Members share in their grief during this difficult time.
