Parliament, Monday, 31 July 2023 – The Portfolio Committee on Health has extended the deadline for stakeholders and interested individuals to submit written comments on the Tobacco Products and Electronic Delivery Systems Control Bill to 4 September 2023
Committee Chairperson Dr Kenneth Jacobs said the committee received several requests for an extension to the deadline of 4 August 2023. The committee welcomes public input and wants to ensure legislation addresses the needs of the sector and South African citizens. Dr Jacobs said: “We have decided to listen to the calls from the various stakeholders to extend the deadline for such submissions.”
The objective of the Bill is to regulate the sale and advertising of tobacco products and electronic delivery systems; to regulate the packaging and appearance of tobacco products and electronic delivery systems and to make provision for the standardisation of their packaging; to provide for standards in respect of the manufacturing and export of tobacco products and electronic delivery systems; to prohibit the sale of tobacco products and electronic delivery systems to children; to prohibit the free distribution of tobacco products and electronic delivery systems; to prohibit the sale of tobacco products and electronic delivery systems by means of vending machines; and to provide for matters connected therewith.
