Parliament, Thursday, 28 May 2026 – The Portfolio Committee on Forestry, Fisheries and the Environment congratulates the Kruger National Park on the occasion of its 100th birthday.
“As we celebrate a century of Kruger National Park — 100 years of protecting South Africa’s wildlife, landscapes, and natural heritage – we must take a moment to reflect on what this park means to us, as it is one of the tourist destinations of choice for its biodiversity,” said the chairperson of the committee, Ms Nqabisa Gantsho.
Since its proclamation in 1926, Kruger has stood as a symbol of conservation, a home to the Big Five, and a destination that connects millions of people to the wild. Its contribution to biodiversity, tourism and community livelihoods is immeasurable.
The Portfolio Committee notes the progress made by the South African National Parks (SANParks) over the years in transforming the Kruger Park into an inclusive space that addresses past injustices. Since the onset of our democracy and under the leadership of various Ministers, the park has pursued deliberate strategies to address historical injustices, recognise the true landowners, support the settlement of land claims, empower local communities and ensure economic equity. SANParks’ Vision 2040 continues on this transformative trajectory of community beneficiation, socio-economic transformation and an inclusive conservation agenda
Congratulations to SANParks management, the rangers, scientists staff, and all the communities who have safeguarded this national treasure for 100 years. Here’s to the next century of protecting, preserving, and sharing Kruger with the world.
Happy 100th anniversary, Kruger National Park!
