Parliament, Monday, 8 June 2026 – The Portfolio Committee on Electricity and Energy will this week conduct interviews of 26 shortlisted candidates to fill vacancies on the National Nuclear Regulator (NNR) Board.

The committee shortlisted four candidates for the community representative position and 22 for the labour representative position. The interviews will be conducted in a closed committee meeting. Broadcasting and streaming will take place once the interviews have been concluded to ensure a fair process for all candidates.

Last year, the Minister of Electricity and Energy, Dr Kgosientsho Ramokgopa, called for nominations under section 8(7)(a) of the Nuclear Regulator Act, 1999 (Act No. 47 of 1999), to ensure representation from both communities and labour on the NNR Board.

The National Nuclear Regulator (NNR) is a regulatory authority established as a juristic person under section 3 of the Nuclear Regulator Act, 1999. Its mandate is to regulate, monitor and enforce safety standards to achieve safe operating conditions, prevent nuclear accidents, and mitigate the consequences of such accidents.

This ensures the protection of workers, the public, property and the environment against the potentially harmful effects of ionising radiation and radioactive materials.

The committee received a total of 120 applications during the nomination process. The names of the shortlisted candidates, together with their CVs (in compliance with the Protection of Personal Information Act [POPI Act]), were published on Parliament’s website.

The committee invited members of the public and civil society to submit their views on the candidates.

Details of the interviews are as follows:
Date: Tuesday, 9 June 2026
Time: 08:00
Venue: Committee Room 3042, 3rd Floor, 90 Plein Street (closed session)
