Parliament, Friday, 24 April 2026 – The Portfolio Committee on Correctional Services will next week conduct an oversight visit to several correctional centres in Mpumalanga.
The Committee Chairperson, Ms Kgomotso Anthea Ramolobeng, said the committee resolved at the start of its term to do as many physical oversight visits as possible to correctional facilities. The committee has already visited Gauteng, KwaZulu-Natal, Eastern Cape, Western Cape and Limpopo. In accordance with its decision, the committee has identified Mpumalanga as the next to be visited.
The committee will commence the week-long oversight programme with a visit to the Nelspruit Correctional Centre on Tuesday.
The Committee oversees the Department of Correctional Services (DCS) as part of its core mandate. “The visit aims to equip Members of Parliament with a deeper understanding of the conditions and operations within correctional facilities, while also providing an opportunity to engage directly with officials on the ground. This engagement will strengthen Parliament’s oversight role by improving Members’ ability to perform their duties effectively and hold the executive accountable to the National Assembly,” said the Chairperson.
Ms Ramolobeng said the facilities to be visited have been carefully identified to ensure proper oversight of the department. She went on to say that the visit will aim to cover different areas of the correctional system, including sentenced male adult inmates, sentenced females and mothers with babies, as well as remand detainees.
The committee will pay specific focus to the conditions of detention for both remand and sentenced inmates, the overall Infrastructure of correctional centres, rehabilitation and skills programmes provided to offenders, and the treatment and conditions for female offenders, including mothers with babies.
The Chairperson said the committee will also follow up on issues raised during the visits by committees in previous parliamentary terms.
