Parliament, Friday, 5 June 2026 –. The Portfolio Committee on Women Youth and Persons with Disabilities has concluded its interviews for the appointment of Commissioners to serve on the Commission for Gender Equality (CGE).
Out of the 88 applications the committee received,14 candidates who represented diverse backgrounds and possessed an array of skills and expertise were shortlisted.
The committee and its chairperson, Ms Liezl van der Merwe, expressed deep appreciation of the participation of all the candidates in the interviews and their willingness to serve the South African nation.
“We had the privilege of interviewing talented, passionate South Africans committed to advancing gender equality and the important constitutional mandate of the CGE. My sincere thanks go to each one of these South Africans for their willingness to serve our nation,” said Ms van der Merve.
In outlining the final process to the candidates, Ms Liezl van der Merwe said the committee will meet on 9 Tuesday June to deliberate on the outcomes of the interviews. “We will score the candidates and compile a report with seven candidates for the consideration of the National Assembly,” said Ms van der Merwe.
“We are hoping that the National Assembly will agree to our report and support our recommendations. The report will go to the President of the Republic who will ultimately decide on the five candidates to be appointed as commissioners of the Commission for Gender Equality,” added Ms van der Merwe.
