Parliament, Monday, 25 November 2024 – The Chairperson of the Portfolio Committee on Sport, Arts and Culture, Mr Joe McGluwa, has noted with sadness the passing of the writer and poet Mr Breyten Breytenbach at the age of 85 in Paris, France.

The committee sends its condolences to members of the Breytenbach family and friends, and the arts sector as a whole. “Mr Breytenbach departs at the most critical time for our country. He used his pen effectively and struggled for freedom somewhat differently. It is so sad that such an illustrious literary voice has been silenced forever by death,” said Mr McGluwa.

Mr Breytenbach’s family confirmed his passing on the weekend. Mr Breytenbach was an authoritative voice in Afrikaans literature and Mr McGluwa said the country is proud of what Mr Breytenbach has achieved. It is safe to say his was a life well-lived and fulfilled, Mr McGluwa said.

Mr McGluwa also congratulated the Springbok flanker Pieter Steph du Toit for being named the Men’s Player of the Year in 15s rugby. “We are proud of what Peter Steph has achieved, becoming only the fourth rugby player in the world to win the coveted award,” Mr McGluwa said.

“South Africans can be proud of their winning team’s achievements and continue to be the first nation ever to celebrate Springbok Friday each and every week. To us, Rassie remains South African’s World Cup coach for winning 11 out of 13 Series tests and being World Cup title holders,” the Chairperson said.

Seven Springboks were included in the World Rugby Men’s 15s Dream Team of the Year.
