Parliament, Wednesday, 4 May 2022 – The Chairperson of the Portfolio on Women, Youth and Persons with Disabilities, Ms Nonhlanhla Ncube-Ndaba, has condemned in the strongest terms the murder of Ms Hillary Gardee, the daughter of former Member of the National Assembly Mr Godrich Gardee.

Ms Ncube-Ndaba said: “We condemn this barbaric and heinous killing of Hillary in the strongest terms. We are calling on the South African Police Service and other agencies of justice to leave no stone unturned to get the perpetrator.” She added that the perpetrator must face the harshest consequences.

Ms Ncube-Ndaba said the committee appreciates and commends all those South Africans who joined the Gardee family during a very difficult and painful time when they looked for their daughter, and who continued to support them after they received the devastating news of the tragic death of their daughter in a gender-based-violence- (GBV) related circumstances.

Ms Ncube-Ndaba said the painful GBV circumstances under which Hillary died call for all South Africans to aggressive action against all forms of GBV. “We are appealing to all peace-loving South Africans in all our communities to intensify the struggle against this GBV monster in all its manifestations. Let us stand and defend the right to life and security of our children and women,” said Ms Ncube-Ndaba.

The committee extends its condolences to the Gardee family and friends and wishes them strength during this very difficult and trying time. “May Hillary’s soul rest in peace.”
