Parliament, Friday, 8 July 2022 – The Chairperson for the Committee for Section 194 Enquiry has assured South Africans that the committee is on track and ready to start with the proceedings on Monday into Public Protector Adv Busisiwe Mkhwebane’s fitness to hold office.
Committee Chairperson Mr Qubudile Dyantyi today held a final meeting with his management committee and staff to ascertain the readiness for the hearings to start on Monday. “I have been assured that all steps have been taken to ensure that proceedings can commence on Monday without any delays. This is a very important initiative. We are busy with pioneering work.”
The committee was established by the National Assembly (NA) on 16 March 2021 to conduct a constitutional inquiry into the Public Protector’s fitness to hold office.
Mr Dyantyi said the committee will hold hearings every weekday until 3 August 2022. “Monday has been set aside for opening remarks by the evidence leaders and the legal representative of the Public Protector. On Tuesday we will have an expert witness to outline the role of the Office of the Public Protector appearing as the first witness. Thereafter we will start with the witness testimonies.
“In the middle of August, the committee is expected to commence with deliberations on the evidence before it, where after a draft report will be compiled and provided to Adv Mkhwebane for consideration.”
Mr Dyantyi said the committee is expected to finalise its work by the end of September 2022. The enquiry will be hybrid and can be followed live on Parliament’s media platforms.
