Parliament, Thursday, 25 April 2024 – The Select Committee on Health and Social Services unanimously adopted the proposed amendments and the report on the Statistics Amendment Bill.

The committee met on Tuesday to discuss the Bill. During the meeting, the committee deliberated on technical amendments to the Bill. The proposed amendments aimed to clarify certain provisions and ensure the Bill aligns with the intended objectives.

The objective of the Bill is to amend the Statistics Act of 1999 to substitute certain definitions and insert new definitions; to amend the provisions dealing with the powers and duties of the Statistician-General, and to make provision for developing and implementing the National Statistics System and National Strategy for the Development of Statistics by the Statistician-General. The Bill will also strengthen co-ordination and enhance collaboration among data producers and data users by creating an enabling environment for the production and consumption of quality statistics in the country. It will also provide for the establishment of statistics units by organs of state, the submission of annual statistics plans and annual reports by organs of state and establishing the Statistical Clearing House to promote the functions and objectives of the National Statistics System. The Bill also empowers the Minister to make regulations and provide for related matters.

Committee chairperson, Mr Zoyisile Njadu said he looked forward to the Bill's continued progress and reaffirmed commitment to ensure the effective implementation of legislation that promotes the development and use of quality statistics in the country.
