Parliament, Monday, 10 August 2026 – The Chairperson of the Portfolio Committee on Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs (COGTA), Dr Zweli Mkhize, has learnt with sadness about the passing of Mr Mikayifane Elias “Mzi” Khumalo, who chaired the Gauteng Provincial Legislature’s Portfolio Committee on Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs.
Mr Khumalo reportedly died in hospital after he collapsed at his home on Monday morning. He was 54 years old. The committee commended Mr Khumalo for dedicating many years of his life to public service, noting that he played an important role in strengthening oversight, supporting local government and advancing cooperative governance in Gauteng. His commitment to serving communities and promoting accountable governance earned him the respect of colleagues across the three spheres of government, said Dr Mkhize.
“The Honourable Member understood how important effective, accountable local government is to improve the lives of our people,” the Chairperson said. “He will be remembered for his contribution to cooperative governance, legislative oversight and public service. Today, we lost a committed public servant whose work was driven by a deep sense of duty to the people he served.”
On behalf of the committee, the Chairperson extended heartfelt condolences to Mr Khumalo’s family and colleagues in the provincial legislature. "May they find strength and comfort during this difficult time. May his soul rest in peace and his legacy of public service continue to inspire those entrusted with serving our people,” said Dr Mkhize.
