Parliament, Saturday, 2 May 2026 – The Chairperson of the Portfolio Committee on Higher Education, Mr Tebogo Letsie, has welcomed the conferral of an Honorary Doctor of Philosophy in Science: Kinesiology and Coaching Science on legendary football icon, Dr Theophilus “16V” Khumalo, by the Tshwane University of Technology (TUT)

Mr Letsie said the honour recognises Dr Khumalo’s outstanding contribution to the South African football, both on and off the field, and his lasting impact on the development of the sport in the country.

“Dr Khumalo was a midfield maestro like no other. The field was his theatre, and those who watched him play know that he was truly gifted with the ball at his feet. He inspired generations of football lovers and young players across the country,” said Mr Letsie.

Mr Letsie also welcomed the continued recognition by academic institutions of individuals outside of academia who have made meaningful contributions to society in different fields.

“We are pleased by this honour, and we hope similar recognition can also be extended to many other football legends who continue to inspire communities long after hanging up their boots,” added Mr Letsie.

Mr Letsie said there are still many outstanding football players deserving recognition, including Jerry “Legs of Thunder” Sikhosana, Brian “Spiderman” Baloyi, Marks “Go Man Go” Maponyane, Lucas “The Chief” Radebe, Neil Tovey and Helman “Midnight Express” Mkhalele, among others.
