Parliament, Thursday, 11 April 2023 – The Chairperson of the Portfolio Committee on International Relations and Cooperation, Mr Supra Mahumapelo, has described the meeting of the Chairpersons of Committees on International Affairs of BRICS Parliament held in Moscow on 11 and 12 April 2024 as very successful.
Mr Mahumapelo attended the meeting, which set out to discuss the development of cooperation between BRICS parliaments and to share views on the agenda of the 10th BRICS Parliamentary Forum.
The programme of events included meetings of the Heads of Committees on International Affairs with the Chairs Chambers of the Federal Assembly of the Russian Federation, along with other bilateral meetings and sessions.
Mr Mahumapelo said the BRICS Forum is an important platform that is changing the face of politics and economics among member countries. “We came together as the Chairpersons of Committees to pursue the agenda of strengthening dialogues among the member states and to make sure that we interact with Russia, as they will be taking over the chairpersonship of BRICS from South Africa,” he said.
He added: “We are very happy that the proceedings went according to plan and we will continue to support Russia to make sure that its tenure goes very well.”
The meeting follows the successful hosting of the 9th BRICS Parliamentary Forum (PF), which was held in South Africa in September 2023. The theme of this gathering was: “Harnessing Inclusive Multilateralism and Parliamentary Diplomacy to Deepen BRICS and Africa Partnership for Accelerated Implementation of the Africa Free-Trade Agreement.”
Among other things, the 9th BRICS-PF meeting demonstrated the determination and ongoing efforts by members to strengthen BRICS parliamentary exchanges and inter-parliamentary dialogue to deepen parliamentary diplomacy.
