Parliament, Wednesday, 13 May 2026 – The Chairperson of the Portfolio Committee on Health, Ms Faith Muthambi, has urged South Africans to reduce their salt intake as the country marks World Salt Awareness Week.

World Salt Awareness Week seeks to raise awareness about the health risks associated with excessive salt consumption, including hypertension, heart disease and stroke.

Ms Muthambi emphasised the importance of healthier dietary habits, stating that reducing salt intake remains one of the most effective measures to improve public health and prevent non-communicable diseases. She noted that South Africa has made notable progress through the implementation of food labelling regulations, national salt reduction targets and public awareness campaigns aimed at promoting healthier lifestyles.

Ms Muthambi called on both the food industry and consumers to play an active role in promoting better public health. “We urge all South Africans to read food labels carefully, reduce salt in their diets and support initiatives aimed at building a healthier nation.”

The committee reaffirmed its commitment to promoting policies that safeguard the health and wellbeing of all citizens.
