Parliament, Thursday, 9 October 2025 – The Ad Hoc Committee to Investigate Allegations made by the South African Police Service’s KwaZulu-Natal Provincial Commissioner, Lt Gen Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi, concluded its oral hearings with Lt Gen Mkhwanazi in the early hours of this morning.

The proceedings started on Tuesday with evidence leader Adv Norman Arendse, SC, making opening remarks. Lt Gen Mkhwanazi provided evidence in chief yesterday to elaborate on the utterance he made during a media conference on 6 July this year.

The Chairperson of the committee, Mr Molapi Soviet Lekganyane, said the meeting went smoothly today. He said yesterday was an opportunity for the evidence leader to lead the witness during his testimony in chief. Members of the committee used the full day today engaging Lt Gen Mkhwanazi on his sworn statement. 

During the evidence, the committee heard from the testimony of Lt Gen Mkhwanazi on, among other things, the sudden order to disband the Political Killings Task Team (PKTT), allegations of political interference and the involvement of criminals in decision making processes. The committee also heard that the PKTT was performing well on its mandate justifying its existence.

Lt Gen Mkhwanazi provided further evidence regarding allegations he made earlier about, Ms Dianne Kohler. Her political party, the Democratic Alliance informed the meeting that it was still consulting legally on the matter.

The hearings will continue tomorrow with the evidence of the National Police Commissioner General Fannie Masemola. The committee is empowered by the National Assembly Rule 253 and was established following the allegations made by Lt Gen Mkhwanazi.
