Parliament, Saturday, 11 October 2025 – The Ad Hoc Committee to Investigate Allegations made by the South African Police Service’s KwaZulu-Natal Provincial Commissioner, Lt Gen Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi, yesterday concluded its oral hearings with National Police Commissioner General Fannie Masemola.
On Thursday, the Ad Hoc Committee’s evidence leader, Adv Norman Arendse, SC, led Gen Masemola during presentation of his evidence in chief relating to the sworn witness statement he provided to the committee.
During his evidence, the committee heard, among other things, about his preference of gradually wind down the Political Killings Task Team (PKTT) rather than abruptly disbanding it. Gen Masemola emphasised that the infiltration of the SAPS and the Justice, Crime Prevention and Security (JCPS) Cluster was carried out by a small group of individuals or cartels with the sole purpose of seizing control. He also testified about the assistance provided by the Special Investigating Unit (SIU) in conducting lifestyle audits of senior management staff, noting that the SIU has the necessary capacity and operates as an independent body.
The committee noted that the first week of its oral hearings has been highly productive. Over several lengthy sessions, members engaged in robust and thorough discussions in an effort to uncover the facts surrounding the allegations made by Lt Gen Mkhwanazi.
The oral hearings are scheduled to continue on Monday with the testimony of Lt Gen Shadrack Sibiya. The committee is empowered by the National Assembly Rule 253 and was established following the allegations made by Lt Gen Mkhwanazi.
