Parliament, Thursday, 23 October 2025 – The Ad Hoc Committee to Investigate Allegations made by the South African Police Service’s KwaZulu-Natal Provincial Commissioner, Lieutenant General Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi, yesterday concluded its robust engagement with Minister Senzo Mchunu – who is currently on special leave.

During the oral engagements, Members of the committee heard that Minister Mchunu briefed President Cyril Ramaphosa after he had already issued directives to disband the Political Killings Task Team (PKTT). The committee also heard from the Minister about his relationship with his “comrade”, Mr Brown Mogotsi, and his denial that he engaged with murder accused Mr Vusimuzi “Cat” Matala.

Minister Mchunu explained that his decision to issue directives on 31 December 2024 to disband the PKTT was based on his assessment that the team was no longer necessary. He further stated that the substantial costs of maintaining the task team could be better utilised to combat crime in other parts of the country.

Members of the committee questioned whether the PKTT had added any measurable value to the South African Police Service’s fight against crime, given the significant financial resources it required.

The committee’s oral hearings continues today with the testimony from the former Minister of Police, General Bheki Cele. The Ad Hoc Committee, established in terms of National Assembly Rule 253, was formed to investigate allegations made by Lt Gen Mkhwanazi. The committee has until 28 November 2025 to complete its mandate. Documents for the committee can be found on: https://www.parliament.gov.za/ad-hoc-committee-gen-mkhwanazis-allegations
