Parliament, Thursday, 29 May 2025 – The Presiding Officers of Parliament extend their deepest condolences to the family, friends, and colleagues of the late Dr Dean Tshenuwani Simon Farisani, a former Member of Parliament and Speaker of the Limpopo Provincial Legislature.
The Speaker of the National Assembly, Ms Thoko Didiza, and the Chairperson of the National Council of Provinces, Ms Refilwe Mtshweni-Tsipane, join the nation in mourning the loss of Dr Farisani—an esteemed theologian, freedom fighter, and veteran public servant who devoted his life to the betterment of South Africa.
Dr Farisani was a tireless advocate for the liberation of the oppressed. A pioneering voice in the liberation theology movement, he courageously used the pulpit to denounce apartheid and champion the cause of justice and equality. His unwavering commitment to human rights and dignity marked him as one of the most prominent black clergymen of the apartheid era.
In the democratic era, Dr Farisani continued his service to the nation through his role as a Member of Parliament representing the African National Congress (ANC). He actively contributed to the work of various parliamentary committees, helping to uphold Parliament’s constitutional responsibilities of quality oversight, law-making, and representing the people with selflessness and diligence.
The Presiding Officers remember Dr Farisani as a man of humility, wisdom, and integrity. His calm demeanour and extraordinary interpersonal skills were instrumental in fostering constructive dialogue and principled debate in committee engagements. His contributions to Parliament, his province, and the nation will be remembered as part of the enduring legacy he leaves behind—a legacy of courage, service, and principled leadership.
The Presiding Officers of Parliament salute this gentle giant and extend their heartfelt condolences to his family, friends, the ANC, and all South Africans who share in this profound loss.
May his soul rest in eternal peace.
