Wednesday, 3 May 2017 – Parliament joins the world in paying tribute to members of the media today, World Press Freedom Day.

Media freedom is specifically mentioned in our Constitution, our supreme law. Clause 16, dealing with Freedom of Expression states that everyone’s right to freedom of expression includes freedom of the press and other media.

The media played a vital role in exposing the brutality and oppression of apartheid and members of the media were among those who were detained, tortured and who lost their lives, while pursuing their profession.

In our democracy the media continue to have a vital role – in protecting and advancing our democracy and keeping the people in touch with processes and events affecting their lives. Parliament regards the media as a partner in this quest to enhance public involvement in the work of the national legislature and intends to continue to strengthen areas of cooperation and common purpose.
