Parliament, Wednesday, 8 October 2025 – The Portfolio Committee on Water and Sanitation will tomorrow head to Gauteng to continue its oversight intended to assess water and sanitation services, especially infrastructure development within the province. The visit is in line with Parliament’s constitutional mandate to oversee the executive and ensure accountability.
The provision of quality water and sanitation services was identified by President Cyril Ramaphosa during his State of the Nation Address as a key driver for unlocking socio-economic development. It is therefore necessary to monitor progress in implementing these services.
The Gauteng visit follows an urgent meeting held with the City of Johannesburg on 19 September 2025, where the committee raised concerns about the city’s inadequate response to persistent water shortages and the defunding of Johannesburg Water, which hampers infrastructure development .The visit is a follow-up aimed at obtaining tangible responses to the issues raised, particularly around the city’s water security and funding challenges.
Furthermore, the committee seeks to conduct oversight over the water infrastructure projects implemented by Rand Water Board and City of Johannesburg Water. As part of the visit, the committee will tomorrow visit the Crosby Reservoir and new water pipeline, the Brixton Reservoir and the Germiston Acid Mine Drainage Treatment site.
The committee will be in Gauteng on Thursday and Friday.
