Parliament, Tuesday, 11 August 2026 – The Portfolio Committee on Small Business Development will tomorrow, Wednesday, 12 August 2026, receive a briefing from the Small Enterprise Development Finance Agency (SEDFA) on the Public Protector’s report concerning allegations that some funding from the R500 million Spaza Shop Support Fund was disbursed to foreign nationals.
The committee will also receive an update from the Department of Small Business Development on progress made in disbursing support from the fund to qualifying South African-owned spaza shops. The briefings form part of the department’s and SEDFA’s 2026/27 first-quarter performance reports.
Administered by SEDFA and the National Empowerment Fund, the Spaza Shop Support Fund was jointly launched by Small Business Development Minister Stella Ndabeni as well as Trade, Industry and Competition Minister Parks Tau in April 2025. The fund is intended to provide up to R300 000 in financial and non-financial support to qualifying local township and rural spaza shops.
