Parliament, Monday, 21 October 2024 – The Select Committee on Agriculture, Land Reform and Mineral Resources will this week conduct a joint oversight visit with the Select Committee on Economic Development and Trade.
The joint oversight visit will assess the post-settlement support for beneficiaries of land reform programmes, with a focus on the economic viability of communities that have reclaimed land in both agricultural and conservation areas. The committees will evaluate the support mechanisms in place and the challenges faced by communal property associations managing undeveloped conservation land, as well as engage with SANParks to understand their operational constraints and mandate.
The visit is essential for understanding the current land use and economic integration opportunities for communities who have reclaimed land, particularly those adjacent to national parks. The aim is to determine how these communities can be supported in developing sustainable economic activities, particularly in the context of conservation and ecotourism. Furthermore, the committees will explore the effectiveness of intergovernmental collaboration in implementing policies that support infrastructure development and job creation in the Free State Province.
Members of the media are invited to attend and cover the oversight visit. There will be opportunities for interviews with the committee.
