Parliament, Wednesday, 22 April 2026 – The Select Committee on Public Petitions and Executive Undertakings will on Friday, 24 April, conduct oversight at Magog village in Umzumbe, KwaZulu-Natal.
This follows a petition the committee received from Mr Micheal Sithole (petitioner) on behalf of the Sithole family and other affected community members. They are seeking assistance from the National Council of Provinces regarding the SA-Lithium mining company’s alleged systematic disregard of the mining regulatory framework in Magog village.
The petitioner alleges that SA-Lithium failed to consult the Magog community before undertaking mining activities in the area. The main objective of this follow-up oversight is to assess the progress made and whether adequate action has been taken to implement the committee’s recommendations.
The committee intends meeting with SA-Lithium, the Department of Mineral Resources and Energy, the Umzumbe Local Municipality and the authorities the petitioner considers able to assist in resolving the grievances mentioned in the petition.
