Parliament, Monday, 24 August 2026 – The Standing Committee on Public Accounts (SCOPA) and the Portfolio Committee on Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs will tomorrow hold a follow-up joint committee meeting with the eThekwini Metropolitan Municipality on its 2024/25 audit outcomes.
The meeting follows a public hearing held by SCOPA with the municipality on 20 May 2026, where the committee reviewed the municipality’s 2024/25 audit outcomes and raised concerns about governance, accountability, procurement, housing, water management and the use of disaster funds.
The committee is expected to receive an update from the municipality on progress made in addressing matters raised during the previous engagement, including plans to improve service delivery, strengthen governance controls and ensure consequence management where required.
SCOPA Chairperson Mr Songezo Zibi said the committee remains committed to ensuring that public funds are used responsibly and that residents receive the services to which they are entitled. “Our responsibility is to ensure that every cent spent is accounted for and that residents see tangible improvements in their daily lives,” said Mr Zibi. “We cannot turn a blind eye to allegations of nepotism and conflicts of interest. These issues erode public trust and hinder effective governance,” he added.
During the previous engagement, committee members raised concerns about flood victims’ living conditions, allegations relating to disaster funds, water management challenges, nepotism policies, contractual disputes and performance management within the municipality.
Members also emphasised the need for urgent action to provide safe and secure housing for flood victims, strengthen procurement processes, investigate allegations of fraud thoroughly and ensure that municipal employees are held accountable for their performance.
