Parliament, Friday, 4 October 2024 – The Standing Committee on Public Accounts (SCOPA) will conduct oversight visits to Eskom and the Passenger Rail Agency of South Africa (PRASA) next week.
The oversight visit to Eskom continues the work conducted by the 6th Parliament’s SCOPA, which monitored Eskom, specifically the Medupi power station matter and other Eskom-related issues. The committee visit follows up on the 2019 and 2022 oversight trips to Eskom. SCOPA is scheduled to meet with the power utility’s Board and management to get an update on the entity’s performance.
SCOPA’s oversight visit to PRASA will predominately focus on the outcomes of the Auditor-General’s (AG) audit reports. The AG briefed SCOPA last month on PRASA’s audit outcomes for the 2022/23 financial year, where procurement and contract management, expenditure management, and consequence management were identified as areas of material non-compliance. PRASA received a qualified audit opinion. The Special Investigating Unit also updated SCOPA on the investigations currently underway at PRASA.
The 2023/24 financial year audit outcomes for both entities will be presented before SCOPA during the next term. The transport and logistics sector, an important portfolio, significantly impacts the everyday lives of South Africans and the business community. For SCOPA, it is critical that this industry maintains its best possible operational and financial health.
