Parliament, Tuesday, 18 November 2025 – The Portfolio Committee on Public Works and Infrastructure will tomorrow engage with families of the victims of the collapsed George Building and the George Municipality as part of its ongoing oversight on the George building collapse, which claimed lives of the people.

In its joint meeting with the Portfolio Committee on Human Settlements, on 5 November 2025, the committee expressed concerns that, more than a year after the incident, no one has been held accountable. The committee reiterated that the collapse exposed serious regulatory and systemic weaknesses in the construction industry, as well as shortcomings in monitoring and coordination between government departments and municipalities.

The engagements form part of the committee’s oversight visits to the Western Cape, where it is assessing infrastructure projects and progress in small harbour development to support economic recovery.

The programme is as follows:
Wednesday, 19 November 2025
09:00 – 16:00
Briefing by the George Municipality on the forensic report into the building collapse and visit to site of the collapsed building.
Venue: George Municipal Council Chambers, 71 York Street, George

Thursday, 20 November 2025
09:00 – 14:00
Public hearing with affected families and local structures
Venue: Thembalethu Community Hall, Zone 9, George
