Parliament, Friday, 4 October 2024 – The Portfolio Committee on Public Works and Infrastructure (PCPWI) is embarking on a capacity-building workshop and oversight visits from 7 to 11 October in Gauteng. The committee’s programme will feature a three-day capacity-building workshop at the Sheraton Hotel in Pretoria from 7 to 9 October, which will be succeeded by two days of oversight visits to public works facilities, including Telkom Towers and the Salvokop government precinct from 10 to 11 October.

The primary goal of the workshop is to deepen the committee members’ understanding of legislative technicalities while providing them with comprehensive insight into the operational framework of the Department of Public Works and Infrastructure (DPWI) and its related entities. In partnership with the National School of Governance and the Wits University School of Construction Economics and Management, the PCPWI has structured a robust learning agenda. Committee members will gain valuable expertise from prominent voices in academia, the Office of the Auditor-General, former Public Protector Adv Thuli Madonsela and the Public Service Commission.

The committee Chairperson, Ms Carol Phiri, said: “We are committed to acquiring firsthand knowledge of the department’s daily operations to enhance our understanding of the DPWI and its entities. This was a key resolution during our induction to prioritise the critical areas of concern identified in the 6th Parliament’s legacy report.”

Ms. Phiri further emphasised: “Our objective is to conduct our oversight duties with the necessary knowledge and tools to ensure effective scrutiny and uphold financial accountability.”

This workshop exemplifies the committee’s steadfast commitment to strengthening its oversight capabilities, ensuring the DPWI’s mandate is fulfilled efficiently and transparently.

Members of the media are welcome to cover the workshop and oversight visits.
