Parliament, Tuesday, 19 May 2026 – The Portfolio Committee on Employment and Labour will tomorrow, Wednesday 20 May, receive a briefing from the Unemployment Insurance Fund (UIF) on the implementation, governance, expenditure and impact of the Labour Activation Programme.

The programme was introduced as an active labour market intervention aimed at reducing unemployment, preserving existing jobs, improving employability and supporting distressed enterprises through targeted training, skills development and enterprise support initiatives. The programme later expanded significantly and formed part of broader government efforts to respond to rising unemployment levels, economic distress and labour market pressures.

Committee members are expected to, among other things, interrogate the programme’s implementation across all nine provinces, including employability projects, the Temporary Employer/Employee Relief Scheme and business turnaround and recovery initiatives.

The committee will also adopt the report of the study tour to Brazil, which was undertaken from 20 to 28 March 2026, and adopt minutes of 6 May 2026.

Details of the meeting are as follows:
Date: Wednesday, 20 May 2026
Time: 09:00
Venue: Zoom virtual platform and on YouTube

Members of the media are invited to attend and cover the meeting.
