Parliament, Friday, 4 March 2022 – The Portfolio Committee on Police will today and tomorrow visit Norwood and Tembisa Police Stations in Gauteng to assess the provision of service delivery at the two stations. The committee is of the view that effective police stations are critical in the fight against crime.
The decision to visit Norwood police station was necessitated by the recent report that revealed that 158 firearms were stolen from the police stations’ evidence rooms. The aim of the visit is to establish whether there are appropriate measures in place to safeguard evidence room where firearms are kept and to prevent the recurrence of the same incident in future. Also, the committee seeks to ascertain if consequence management has been implemented.
The Tembisa police station has repeatedly appeared among the list of top 30 police stations where the most crimes are reported. By visiting the station, the committee intends to establish whether there are systems in place to ensure that the station improves its service delivery and that interventions are in place to reduce the crime rate and provide effective policing services to the communities they serve.
The committee will interact with the Provincial Police Commissioner, station management teams as well as community policing forums.
