Parliament, Wednesday, 23 October 2024 – The Select Committee on Petitions and Executive Undertakings will conduct an oversight visit to Khutsong and Carletonville in Gauteng to engage with petitioners after it received a petition to declare Khutsong a national disaster area due to the escalating occurrence of sinkholes.
The severity and frequency of these sinkholes are increasingly threatening public safety, damaging infrastructure, and causing substantial long-term economic concerns. The committee will conduct site visits to several areas around Khutsong and Carletonville in the morning and thereafter conduct a hearing with petitioners in the afternoon.
