Parliament, Thursday, 11 September 2025 – The Select Committee on Public Petitions and Executive Undertakings will conduct an oversight visit to the SA-Lithium mining company in Magog Village at Umzumbe in KwaZulu-Natal to assess the extent of allegations made against the company.

The committee received a petition from Mr Michael Kholiswa Sithole, requesting the intervention of the National Council of Provinces (NCOP) regarding SA-Lithium’s alleged systematic disregard of mining regulations in Magog Village.

The petitioner alleged that the mining company failed to conduct proper consultations before commencing operations. Furthermore, that the company violated cultural rights by relocating graves without due process, caused environmental degradation and damaged homes through blasting activities. The petitioner also alleged that complaints submitted to the Director-General of Mineral Resources and Energy received no response.

Committee Chairperson Mr Ofentse Mokae emphasised the importance of responding promptly to petitions to ensure issues are not overtaken by the busy parliamentary programme. “The committee has committed ourselves to processing petitions without delay. Meeting petitioners directly allows us to fully grasp the issues at hand, so that when we deliberate in Cape Town, we do so with a comprehensive understanding to guide our decisions,” he said.

Details of the visit are as follows:
