Parliament, 9 August 2022 – The Portfolio Committees on Mineral Resources and Energy as well as the committee on Police will from tomorrow, 10 August 2022, embark on a two-day joint oversight visit to the illegal mining hotspots and mine closure projects in Krugersdorp, Gauteng.

The joint oversight visit follows the unfortunate, horrific incident that happened on the 28th of July 2022, wherein eight young women were attacked and gang-raped while filming a music video at an unused mine allegedly by foreign nationals who are also conducting illegal mining activities.

The incident allegedly occurred at an abandoned, unused mine, namely Mintails Mining South Africa (Pty) Ltd which had operations in Krugersdorp, amongst other places. The company went through a business rescue process which was not successful, as a result, it then closed down its operations in the area.
