Parliament, Thursday, 9 November 2023 – The Portfolio Committee on Mineral Resources and Energy will from tomorrow, Friday, 10 November 2023, take public hearings on the Electricity Regulations Amendment (ERA) Bill [B13-2023] to the Western Cape’s Overberg District at the Dutch Reformed Church in Citrusdal.
On Saturday, Sunday and Monday, the committee will proceed with these public hearings in the Cape Winelands and Overberg districts, as well as the City of Cape Town Metropolitan Municipality. All the public hearings will start from 10 am to 2 pm.
The Western Cape is the seventh province to host public hearings on the ERA Bill after Limpopo, Mpumalanga, North West, Northern Cape, Free State and Gauteng. These public hearings are conducted in line with section 59(1)(a) of the Constitution of the Republic of South Africa, which requires the National Assembly to facilitate public involvement in the legislative and other processes of the Assembly and its committees. Members of the media are invited to attend the public hearings.
The ERA Bill seeks, amongst other things, to effect amendments to the Electricity Regulation Act in order to improve its administration; to provide for the establishment of the Transmission System Operator SOC Ltd and also to provide for an open-market platform that will allow for competitive electricity trading.
