Parliament, Monday, 24 March 2025 — The Portfolio Committee on Mineral and Petroleum Resources will conduct an oversight visit to the Strategic Fuel Fund (SFF) in Saldanha tomorrow (25 March 2025) and the Astron Energy Refinery in Milnerton on Wednesday (26 March).

The purpose of the two-day oversight visit is for the committee to assess Astron Energy Refinery’s readiness for the 2027 clean fuels deadline and, most importantly, to evaluate the company’s challenges. The country cannot afford the failure of Astron Energy Refineries, the only operating refinery after Sasol’s Secunda Coal-to-Liquid and Sasolburg Gas-to-Liquid refineries, which the committee visited in February.

The committee recognises the importance of having sufficient petroleum reserves to ensure constant supply during cases of emergency, and this is the responsibility of the SFF, a subsidiary of the Central Energy Fund Group. The SFF is responsible for the management and storage of government and privately-owned stocks of crude oil, petroleum products, and oil and gas infrastructure projects.

Tomorrow’s programme is as follows:

Date: Tuesday, 25 March 2025
Time: 09:00 to 16:00
Venue: Saldanha Terminal - Skurwerug, MR559 Road, Saldanha

Members of the media are invited to join the committee.
